WASHINGTON – On June 13, Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-CA), coach of the Democratic Congressional Baseball Team, issued the below statement ahead of Wednesday night’s game.
In December of 2022, Congresswoman Sánchez was named head coach of the Congressional Baseball team, replacing outgoing coach Congressman Mike Doyle. She will be the first woman coach since the first Congressional Baseball Game was played in 1909.
“I am honored to have Coach Doyle’s confidence and the support of my colleagues and players to lead this team,” said Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez. “It is surreal to be the first woman to serve as coach in the history of the Congressional Baseball Game, and I hope it encourages more women and girls to get out there and play ball. I am also excited to go head-to-head with Republican Coach Roger Williams and am hoping we can give him and his squad a run for their money on Wednesday!”
Congresswoman Sánchez continued: “Anyone who knows me knows my heart is in baseball. I love this game, I love this team, and I’m excited to see what we can do this year. See you on the field!”
Congresswoman Sánchez has played on the Congressional Baseball team since 2003. She has participated in 16 games and has served under 2 different head coaches.
In the past, Congresswoman Sánchez sported “IX” on the back of her jersey in support of Title IX and encouraging more women to get involved in sports. This year, in keeping with tradition of Democratic coaches wearing the colors of their hometown baseball team, Sánchez will wear a Fernando Valenzuela jersey in honor of the legendary Mexican-born Dodgers pitcher.
A lifelong Dodgers fan, Congresswoman Sánchez grew up playing organized fast-pitched softball and casual baseball with her four brothers. It is a love she has passed on to her son, Joaquin.
