On Ma 30, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-41) issued the following statement on The Fiscal Responsibility Act:
“Last year, I promised voters that I would stop the runaway inflationary spending in Washington. Unlike President Biden and Democrats in Congress who recklessly spent trillions of taxpayer money, The Fiscal Responsibility Act will do just that – return fiscal responsibility and sanity to the federal spending process. In the past few weeks, a bipartisan majority of Americans have made it clear that they believe spending reductions must be included with any debt ceiling increase. While House Republicans were forced to make compromises – since Republicans do not control the Senate or White House – we achieved what we set out to do and what the American people expected of us – we took a step towards getting our fiscal house in order.
“The level of taxpayer savings in this bill is historic. The bill reduces non-defense discretionary spending by $40 billion – the largest amount ever. The bill claws back nearly $28 billion in unspent COVID funding – the largest rescission of federal funds in history. Republicans were able to negotiate these savings while protecting our veterans, defense spending, as well as Social Security and Medicare.”
“Prioritizing defense spending that is essential to our national security has been a priority for House Republicans from the outset of this debt ceiling negotiation. The Fiscal Responsibility Act reflects that by rejecting Democratic demands for parity between defense and non-defense funding. As Chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, I intend to work with my colleagues to focus on near term threats and long term modernization within the agreed upon caps. I believe we can meet those goals by cutting funding for misguided Defense Department priorities that aren’t related to national security, optimizing the workforce, and creating incentives for disruption to create competition and lower costs.”
“The bill also includes a number of Republican policy goals. For the first time in decades, we are removing red tape, lowering costs, and accelerating major infrastructure projects by streamlining federal regulatory regimes. We are also lifting more Americans out of poverty by strengthening welfare work requirements for able-bodied adults without children. The bill also rejects the $5 trillion in new taxes backed by Democrats and cuts funding increases backed by President Biden to grow the number of IRS agents to target more Americans. The Fiscal Responsibility Act reflects and addresses the reality that we don’t have a revenue problem in Washington, we have a spending problem.”
