Assemblyman Bill Essayli issued a statement following the announcement by the United States Attorney’s Office, Central District of California, regarding federal charges against Ari Aki Young. Young had previously been acquitted of attempted murder charges involving retired San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Meagan McCarthy.
“Last year, retired Sheriff’s Deputy Meagan McCarthy was denied justice by a broken legal system in California which protects criminals — even those who attempt to murder a law enforcement officer. That’s why I authored AB 3039 to combat the kind of anti-police jury bias which may have contributed to this criminal being acquitted of attempted murder. Democrats in Sacramento killed my commonsense bill to advance their pro-criminal agenda, but I am pleased the U.S. Attorney’s Office is pursuing federal charges to finally provide justice for Deputy Meagan McCarthy," said Assemblyman Essayli.
He further commented on the necessity of federal intervention: “It is shameful and unacceptable that federal prosecutors have to step in to clean up California’s lawlessness on the streets.”
