Washington, D.C. – On April 20, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.), Co-Chair of the Equality Caucus and a senior member of the Education and the Workforce Committee, released the following statement in response to the House passage of H.R. 734, the “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act.”
“I am disgusted and deeply disappointed, but sadly not surprised, at the passage of H.R. 734,” said Rep. Mark Takano. “Republicans continue to use the House of Representatives as a bully pulpit to punish a small minority of children rather than tackle the real and pressing issues facing our education systems. I denounce the passage of this so-called “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act,” which does nothing to actually address inequities in women’s athletics, and I hope the American people recognize that this cowardly bill is nothing more than a political power play rather than a robust reinforcement of Title IX.
“This does not end here. I vow to continue fighting for all trans students, who deserve to live, learn, and play sports safely, just like any other student.”
