While Valentine’s Day has passed, love is still in the air. For many, smell plays a critical role in their search for love.

In a recent report by the Cleveland Clinic, ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. Michael Benniger highlighted the close link between smell and sexual attraction.

“That characteristic smell of a person’s perfume, cologne or the scent of their shampoo or soap is important to sexual arousal,” the Cleveland Clinic states. “The smell of human perspiration also has a direct effect on sexual receptors in the brain.”

Though the impact of pheromones has been widely debated, research shows they play a crucial role in reproduction among animals, as well as in human sexuality and stimulation.

Among other impacts, the loss of smell may correlate with a decreased sex drive. While the olfactory system triggers memory, the nose may also play a critical role in an individual’s perception of sex when paired with the olfactory system.

Related to this system, the vomeronasal organ (VNO) likely plays a role in human sexuality. This small accessory organ in the nose is located at the base of the nasal septum in the roof of the mouth. Though the VNO is largely non-function in humans, Benninger said some researchers believe it still may play a role in pheromone and other chemical communication.

“It’s amazing how many of our body functions are directed toward sexual activity and reproduction,” Benninger told the Cleveland Clinic.
