The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office- Southwest Station reminded residents on April 2 to avoid driving under the influence of drugs as the April 20 (4/20) holiday approaches. The agency said that although marijuana use is legal in California, drug-impaired driving remains illegal and dangerous.
This reminder comes ahead of a day often associated with marijuana use, highlighting concerns about impaired driving risks. Law enforcement emphasized that impairment from any substance can endanger everyone on the road.
“Whether it is on 4/20 or any other day, it is unsafe and illegal to drive under the influence of marijuana,” Deputy Tony Hamilton said. “If you plan to consume marijuana or any impairing substance, make a plan to get home safely with a sober ride home.”
The department cited data from the Transportation Injury Mapping System showing that in California during 2023, there were 573 fatalities related to drug-involved traffic crashes. Officials warned that drugs such as marijuana can slow reaction time, reduce coordination, increase reckless behavior, impair cognitive functions, and cause drowsiness—all factors that raise crash risks.
To help prevent impaired driving incidents during upcoming celebrations like 4/20, the sheriff’s office recommended designating a sober driver in advance or using ridesharing services, taxis, or public transportation. They also encouraged people not to let friends or family members drive while impaired and advised reporting suspected impaired drivers by calling emergency services.
