The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office – Southwest Station announced on May 2 that it is encouraging the public to celebrate Cinco de Mayo responsibly by planning ahead and designating a sober driver.

The announcement highlights the importance of safety during holiday celebrations, especially when alcohol or other substances may be involved. The department aims to prevent impaired driving incidents and keep roads safe for everyone.

Deputy Bowman said, “Don’t put yourself and others on the road at risk by driving impaired. If you’re planning to celebrate with a drink or two, leave your keys at home and designate a sober driver.” The department also reminds residents that impairment can result not only from alcohol but also from prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products, and other substances. Drivers are urged to read warning labels on medications and ensure someone sober is behind the wheel if there is any risk of impairment.

The sheriff’s office advises community members to call 9-1-1 if they see someone who appears to be driving while impaired. Funding for this program comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety and administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
