The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has announced plans to conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint in Coachella on January 10, 2026. The checkpoint will take place from 8:00 PM until 2:00 AM at a location that has not been disclosed.
According to the department, locations for DUI checkpoints are selected based on data showing where impaired driving-related crashes have occurred. The goal of these checkpoints is to enhance public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Deputy Jason Beck said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that impairment can result not only from alcohol but also from some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs. Additionally, while both medicinal and recreational marijuana use are legal in California, it remains illegal to drive under the influence of marijuana.
Individuals charged with a first-time DUI offense may face average fines and penalties totaling $13,500, as well as license suspension.
Funding for this program comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
