The Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station will conduct a DUI checkpoint in Rancho Mirage on January 23, 2026. The checkpoint will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city.
Deputy Derek Thomas emphasized the importance of responsible decision-making regarding impaired driving. “Impaired driving is preventable,” Thomas said. “It’s a choice. If you’ve been drinking or taken drugs that impair, make the right choice by finding a sober driver or alternate transportation to take you places.”
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office noted that impairment can result not only from alcohol but also from some prescription and over-the-counter medications. The public is advised to follow usage directions and heed warning labels about operating vehicles. Although marijuana use is legal for medicinal and recreational purposes in California, driving under its influence remains illegal.
According to the sheriff’s office, individuals charged with a first-time DUI offense face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties and may have their license suspended.
Funding for this program comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
