The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office – San Jacinto Station announced on May 5 that it will increase patrols from 5 PM to 11 PM to look for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during Cinco de Mayo celebrations.
The announcement aims to remind the public about the risks associated with impaired driving and encourage people to plan ahead by designating a sober driver. Law enforcement officials say this is important for keeping roads safe during holiday festivities, when there may be an increased risk of accidents involving impaired drivers.
Deputy Joe Valencia said, “Don’t put yourself and others on the road at risk by driving impaired. If you’re planning to celebrate with a drink or two, leave your keys at home and designate a sober driver.”
The Sheriff’s Office also noted that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products, and other substances can also affect a person’s ability to drive safely. The agency advises anyone taking medications with driving warnings or consuming any impairing substance to let someone else drive. Community members are encouraged to call 9–1–1 if they see someone who appears to be driving while impaired.
Funding for this program comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
