The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has announced that it will conduct DUI patrols in Indian Wells on Friday, January 16th. The operation will run from 2:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., focusing on identifying drivers suspected of being under the influence.

“Impaired driving is preventable,” Deputy Wayne Davidson said. “It’s a choice. If you’ve been drinking or consuming drugs that impair, make the right choice by finding a sober driver or alternate transportation to take you places.”

Authorities emphasize that impairment is not limited to alcohol consumption. Prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can also affect a person’s ability to drive safely. The Sheriff’s Office advises motorists to follow usage directions and pay attention to warning labels regarding driving. Although medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, operating a vehicle while under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.

Those arrested for driving impaired face significant consequences, including an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties for first-time offenders, as well as license suspension.

The DUI enforcement program is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
