Mark Takano, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 39th district since 2013, has recently shared his observations and concerns regarding immigration detention and trans rights through a series of tweets. Born in Riverside, California in 1960, Takano is an alumnus of Harvard University and has been vocal about issues affecting marginalized communities.
On June 17, 2025, Takano expressed his dismay at the conditions he witnessed at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center. He stated that “Immigration detention is a multi-million dollar industry, but what I saw at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center wouldn’t show it.” He highlighted limited access to phones and clean clothes as indicators of “inhumane treatment” under the current administration.
The following day, on June 18, Takano reported on an oversight visit he conducted with colleagues to the same facility. He noted that “Some detainees haven’t had a change of clothes in 10 days and have limited access to phones.” Takano raised concerns about potential increases in detention populations due to deportation quotas and ICE raids.
In another tweet from June 18, Takano addressed a court decision impacting trans Americans. He remarked that “The decision from the Court will have sweeping implications and irreparable harm to trans Americans.” He affirmed his commitment to advocating for their rights to live with dignity.
Mark Takano continues to serve as a dedicated representative for California’s 39th district, bringing attention to significant social justice issues within his legislative role.
